چکیده

We performed flow cytometry and cytogenetic analysis of 37 adenocarcinomas of the distal esophagus and cardia, of which 22 arose in Barrett's mucosa. Two of eight analyzed specimens of Barrett's mucosa had clonal chromosomal abnormalities. In 19 cases clonal chromosomal abnormalities were found in tumor tissue. The complex pattern of cytogenetic changes did not differ among the adenocarcinomas arisen in Barrett's esophagus, and those in the distal esophagus without Barrett's mucosa or cardia. Abnormal karyotypes with multiple and complex rearrangements were seen in 11 cases and with single or a few numeric changes in eight. Losses of chromosomes 4, 18, 21, and Y were the most frequent numeric changes. Loss of the Y chromosome was observed in eight of 26 tumors of males (31%). Gains of chromosomes 14 and 20 were also frequent numeric changes. Structural abnormalities were observed in 13 of the abnormal karyotypes (68%). The chromosome arms most frequently rearranged were 1p, 3q, 11p and 22p. The chromosome arm most frequently contributing to losses was 1p, with the shortest region of overlap being 1p22-33. The chromosome arms most often involved in gains were 11p and 22p, and i(3q) was the isochromosome that was most frequently identified.

Barrett's Mucosa Segmentation in Endoscopic Images Using a Hybrid Method: Spatial Fuzzy c-mean and Level Set

Barrett's mucosa is one of the most important diseases in upper gastrointestinal system that caused by gastro-esophagus reflux. If left untreated, the disease will cause distal esophagus and gastric cardia adenocarcinoma. The malignancy risk is very high in short segment Barrett's mucosa. Therefore, lesion area segmentation can improve specialist decision for treatment. In this paper, we propos...

Validity of the Specialized Columnar Epithelium as a Diagnostic Criterion of the Short Segment Barrett’s Esophagus

OBJECTIVE In the areas where intestinal metaplasia of the stomach is highly prevalent, diagnosing Barrett's esophagus solely by the presence of specialized columnar epithelium in the distal esophagus may lead to many false positive diagnoses. The aim of this study was to test validity of the specialized columnar epithelium as a diagnostic criterion of the short segment Barrett's esophagus in Ko...

Polypoid Dysplasia in Barrett's Esophagus: Diagnosis, Management, and Very Different Outcomes in Two Consecutive Cases

Background. Barrett's esophagus is associated with an increased risk of adenocarcinoma. Dysplasia in Barrett's esophagus is a precursor to adenocarcinoma. Rarely, dysplastic polypoid lesions are superimposed on Barrett's esophagus. Most reported cases of polypoid dysplasia in Barrett's esophagus have been advanced on presentation and treated with esophagectomy. We describe two cases of polypoid...

Esophageal carcinoma: current controversies.

The incidence of esophageal adenocarcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the gastric cardia has increased so substantially in the last two decades that adenocarcinoma now accounts for approximately one half of esophageal malignancies seen in the United States and Europe. The reasons for this histological change may be related to a parallel increase in the incidence of gastroesophageal reflux disease in...

Barrett's esophagus and intestinal metaplasia of gastric cardia: prevalence, clinical, endoscopic and histological features.

BACKGROUND & AIMS Over the past few decades, the incidence of adenocarcinomas of the gastroesophageal junction has rapidly increased. Barrett's esophagus is a risk factor for esophageal adenocarcinoma, but the role of intestinal metaplasia of the gastric cardia as a precursor in cardia-related cancer is controversial. The aims of the present study were to examine the prevalence of intestinal me...
